Mold prevention for leather jackets to do before the rainy season

The period just before the rainy season is the ideal time to review your storage environment.

It’s still the season for wearing a leather jacket, but before you know it, the rainy season will be here.
The season that requires the most care for leather jackets is just around the corner.

Japan's rainy season is hot and humid.
This is also a season when mold is likely to form on leather jackets.

In this article, we’ll introduce how to store your leather jacket and prevent mold—steps you’ll want to take before the rainy season arrives!

The greatest enemy of a leather jacket is moisture.

When storing a leather jacket, what you need to be particularly careful about is...

Humidity / Dryness / UV rays

These three things.

Among these factors, the one to be most mindful of during Japan's rainy season is humidity.
As leather is a material containing proteins and oils, it is prone to mold growth.

Furthermore, the combination of Japan's characteristic hot and humid climate means that leaving items in the closet for extended periods can lead to mold growth.

Once mold has taken hold, even if you remove it from the surface, it is difficult to completely eliminate the roots, and it may recur in the same spot.

That is precisely why it is important to create an environment where mold does not grow.

Mold prevention measures to take before the rainy season

■ Remove dust and dirt before storing.

Mold is caused not only by moisture but also by dust and dirt.

Brush the item, wipe it down thoroughly with a tightly wrung-out towel, and then let it dry completely in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Even just these steps are highly effective in preventing mold.

■ Be careful not to apply too much oil before storage.

It is better to apply oil before storing it.
While it is sometimes said otherwise, we do not recommend excessive oil treatment for STRUM products prior to long-term storage.

In Japan's humid environment, oil can sometimes cause mold.

We recommend thoroughly removing dirt before storing the item, and then performing only the necessary care when the time comes to wear it.

■ Do not store while covered in plastic.

Storing the item while keeping the plastic covering from the time of purchase on it is dangerous.
Because vinyl does not allow moisture to escape, it creates an environment where mold easily develops.

We recommend storing leather jackets in a well-ventilated, shaded area.

■ Also beware of air conditioning, hair dryers, and UV rays.

Continuous exposure to direct airflow from an air conditioner can cause the leather to dry out and lose its natural oils.

Also, do not use a hair dryer to dry the item if it gets wet in the rain. The heat can cause the leather to shrink and harden.

If the item gets wet, we recommend blotting off the moisture with a towel and letting it air-dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Please note that UV rays from direct sunlight can cause fading or discoloration.

Even when hanging it up for storage, please choose a location away from direct sunlight.

Now—before the rainy season—is the time to review your storage environment.

The lifespan of a leather jacket varies significantly depending on how it is stored.

The rainy season, in particular, is a time when even the slightest lapse in vigilance can lead to mold growth.

To ensure you can enjoy your favorite garment for years to come, please take this opportunity to review how you store it.
