Burning Dyed: A 4-Color Comparison — How Each Shade Varies Based on Base Color and Finish

Distinctive colors and character in "Burning Dyed" pieces, even within the same color family.

"Burning Dyed"—the signature garment-dyeing technique of STRUM.

The combination of the leather's base color and the color applied after the product is finished creates significant differences in hue, shading, and character, even among colors within the same family.

ASH AZU and DARK VIRIDIAN, currently available for pre-order.

This time, focusing on these two colors—and also bringing in CATHEDRAL and TOURMALINE BLUE—we will compare the differences in the colors themselves and their finishes!

ASH AZU vs. CATHEDRAL | Differences in blue-violet hues resulting from distinct base colors

Although both feature the "Burning Dyed" finish with navy layered over the top, ASH AZU and CATHEDRAL reveal distinct characters due to their differing base colors.

ASH AZU is a color created by first dyeing the leather a purplish-blue and then applying a "Burning Dye" finish in navy after the product is assembled. The addition of an ironed sheen and a stain-applied gradation results in a finish where vibrant blue and navy tones blend and layer together.

CATHEDRAL, on the other hand, features a base dyed purple with a navy "Burning Dyed" finish, resulting in a deep blue-purple hue that emphasizes the purple tones. Because the base itself is dyed purple, the color does not shift significantly toward brown as it ages; instead, the interplay of light and dark shades between the purple and navy evolves over time.

While both layer the same navy, ASH AZU centers on blue to reveal vivid contrasts of light and dark, whereas CATHEDRAL centers on purple to display deep blue-violet hues.

By comparing them side-by-side, the differences resulting from the base color and finish become much more apparent.

Despite using the same color combination, each piece expresses a distinct shade of blue-green, resulting from differences in the "Burning Dyed" shading technique and the final finish.

DARK VIRIDIAN is based on turquoise but features strong blue undertones, resulting in a blue-green hue with a distinct blue cast.

In contrast, TOURMALINE BLUE features the same turquoise and blue combination but results in a finish where the green tones are more prominent.

Deepening within a monochromatic palette: Burning Dyed “Mono Fade”

The four colors compared here are all created using the Burning Dyed “Mono Fade” technique.

Because the leather is drum-dyed through to the core in a color tone matching the "Burning Dyed" finish, the hue does not shift drastically with wear; instead, the characteristic feature is the deepening of tonal variations and contrast within the same color family.

Despite all being created using the "Burning Dyed" technique, differences in base colors, overlaid hues, and finishes result in distinct appearances—ranging from vibrant blue to deep blue-violet and blue-green.

Pre-orders for ASH AZU and DARK VIRIDIAN are currently open as part of the 2027 S/S “STILL LIFE” collection.

Regarding TOURMALINE BLUE, only the ROM double rider's jacket in Size 4 (M) is currently available for sale; CATHEDRAL expects to receive stock for the 2026-27 A/W season around October or November.

Viewing them side-by-side in photos reveals the differences in their respective hues and characteristics.
