Collection: Leather care by leather jacket professionals [recommended oils].

I would like to tell you about oil maintenance from the perspective of a professional who has been working with leather jackets for more than 20 years, touching and processing leather every day.

About maintenance of STRUM's leather jackets

First of all, as for STRUM's leather jackets, we put oil into the leather when dyeing and tanning, and the more you wear it, the more the oil will soak into the leather. Basically, no oil or other maintenance is required The more you wear it, the more the oil will be absorbed.

General maintenance of leather jacket

What is the effect of oil on leather jacket maintenance?

Speaking of maintenance, " oil" is used, and the effect of the "oil" is the following three points.

  • Nourishes the leather
  • Softens the leather
  • It makes the leather somewhat water-repellent, although the effect varies depending on the type of oil.

What are the types of oils for leather jacket maintenance?

What will be the type of oil among the many types of leather jacket oils?
There are two main types.

  • Animal oil
  • Vegetable oil

Animal oil" and"vegetable oil " can be divided into two types.
Here are the characteristics of each.

Typical animal oil

  • Mink oil
  • Horse oil
  • Neat foot oil, etc.

Oils made from animal-derived oils are called "animal-based oils.

Typical vegetable oils

  • Amani oil
  • Jojoba oil, etc.

Oils extracted from plant seeds are called " vegetable oils.

Characteristics of animal oil

Depending on the product, there are many oils with high viscosity and thick consistency.

Animal-based oils are more compatible with leather because it is originally from animals, and being more compatible means that it is softer.

For leather jackets that have lost their oil and have become dry, or that have not been worn for many years, adding animal oil will nourish and soften the leather jacket again, prevent cracks, etc.

What are the disadvantages of animal oil?

Animal oil also has disadvantages, such as a strong odor due to its animal origin.

Some Italian leathers have a distinctive smell, and many of them are made with cod oil, which is a fish oil.

Cod oil" is soft and softens the leather and gives it a very nice texture, but the disadvantage is that it has a strong odor.

Animal oil also nourishes mold, so if you apply a lot of it, it can easily become moldy.

Since it can be reapplied afterwards as many times as necessary, it is recommended to apply as thin a layer as possible when applying and to maintain it regularly.

Characteristics of Vegetable Oils

Vegetable oil differs from animal oil in that it is relatively smooth and has low viscosity.

Although vegetable oil is harder to soften than animal oil when applied, it nourishes the leather well, so vegetable oil is suitable for the daily maintenance of leather jackets with little damage and with little odor.

What are the disadvantages of vegetable oil?

The same is true for animal oil, but the more oil, the more likely the color will fade (transfer).

When applying vegetable oil, test in an inconspicuous place and apply a little at a time.

Vegetable oil can also cause mold in a bad environment.

Make sure to remove dirt frequently and store in a well-ventilated place.

Based on these considerations, what commercial care oils do you recommend?

First, let's look at commercially available care oils one by one.

Explanation of Renapur Leather Balsam

When it comes to leather maintenance, German-made Renapur is well-known.

  • Beeswax (wax from beehives)
  • Jojoba oil (derived from plant jojoba seeds)
  • Vaseline (petroleum-based ingredient, a gentle ingredient also used in cosmetics)
  • Lanolin (animal WAX)

Basically, it is a treatment, which means it is an overall well-balanced care product that contains oil while also containing WAX.

The oiliness of the product is a strong characteristic of its use.

  • 100% cow leg oil

It has a unique smell, but it blends well with leather.

Do you actually recommend "animal" or "vegetable" oil for daily maintenance?

We have explained about oils at length, but in the end, which is recommended, "animal" or "vegetable " oil? I am sure many of you are wondering.

STRUM designers recommend "vegetable " oil for daily maintenance.

We will actually compare two types of "vegetable oil" with a leather jacket that STRUM designers have been wearing for about 10 years.

Important things before applying oil

First of all, as a prerequisite before applying oil, it is important to "clean the leather jacket" before applying oil.

First, brush it to remove dust and dirt from the entire surface.

Next, wet a towel and wring it tightly until no more water comes out.
(Please use as clean a towel as possible, as dirt on the towel can cause bacteria to adhere to it.)

(Please wipe as finely as possible, as food can fly off and various other things can adhere to the towel without being noticed.
(Please wipe carefully around the pockets as well.)

Wipe up carefully, especially around the neck and other areas that come in contact with the skin.

After blowing up, dry the towel in the shade for about 30 minutes, even with a tightly wrung towel, as the moisture will remain.

In the case of "Renapur Leather Balsam

Try with Renapur Leather Balsam (Renapur Leather Treatment).

It is solid and vegetable-based, so you won't smell it.

It comes with a sponge, but if the condition is not too damaged and it is just daily care, you only need to apply a thin layer on the surface, so we recommend applying it by hand.

You can blend it into the entire surface by lightly taking it in your hand and melting it with the body heat of your palm, and applying it as if you were rubbing it in, with the only guideline being to let it penetrate.

Since it is like being processed with oil, the more you apply it, the less luster it will have.

However, if you apply too much, it may change the look and texture of the leather, so we recommend "about the size of a soybean" on one arm.

Although it will give a matte look, it contains beeswax in addition to oil, and brushing it will make it shiny due to the WAX effect, so we recommend brushing the entire surface after applying it all over.

As a result, Renapur Leather Balsam (Renapur Leather Treatment) penetrates well and leaves a fairly soft and chunky finish.

Water repellency is also created rather well, and is recommended for those who want to wear leather jackets casually, as it repels water.

In the case of "TAPIR LEDERBALSAM

Try with TAPIR LEDERBALSAM.

It is solid and has a very orange smell, so people who don't like the distinctive smell of leather oil won't mind it.

It melts faster in the palm of the hand than Renapur Leather Balsam, and gives the impression of being soft and smooth.

When we finished by rubbing by hand in the same way, the oil feels faster to the touch and has a matte look, so we can say that its permeability is as good as "Renapur Leather Balsam (Renapur Leather Treatment)".

When brushing after rubbing in, the luster will be strong, and it will feel more like wax than oil and a little sticky, but when it dries, it will be smooth and shinier than "Renapur Leather Balsam (Renapur Leather Treatment)".

The water repellency is the same as that of "Renapur Leather Balsam ", but water does not permeate through it and it has a good water repellency.

General comments

Evaluation of Renapur Leather Balsam

Renapur Leather B alsam" has a stronger oil feel or viscosity, so when applied to a leather jacket, it creates a moist matte finish, and when brushed on, it has beeswax in it, which gives it a moderate shine.

If the oil has been soaked in water, or if the leather is damaged, this oil will nourish and soften the leather and restore it to its original state.

Evaluation of TAPIR LEDERBALSAM

TAPIR LEDERBALSAM " feels smooth in the palm of the hand, so it nourishes and softens the leather a little more than it moistens it.

From STRUM designer's point of view This is sufficient for daily maintenance. We are of the opinion that it is a good idea.

Finally.

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, STRUM leather jackets are tanned with oil during dyeing and tanning, and the more you wear it, the more the oil will be absorbed into the jacket, so it is very important to keep the quality of the jacket. Basically, no oil or other maintenance is required. The more you wear it, the more the oil will be absorbed into the jacket.

However, we have prepared this article for those who want to take care of their leather jackets in case of sudden rain or for those who want to take care of their jackets all the time.

We hope that this article will be of interest to leather jacket users and that it will be helpful to them.

At STRUM, we are trying to create unprecedented leather jackets such as "leather jackets that have experienced combustion" and "leather jackets that have been buried in the ground", while keeping an eye on the essence of leather jackets.

We hope that all STRUMMERs, even those who are new to us, will be able to keep an eye on STRUM's creations.
